Shelves and niches are wild elements to decorate rooms of any size
Shelves have great power to transform home environments. They not only house decorative pieces and beautiful objects that personalize the look of the place, but they can also add their own style to the decoration. Furthermore, they are great allies for those smaller spaces that need ingenious storage solutions. The shelves for both rooms have even more value – be it small or large environment, it is in them that we put our favourite books, perfumes, collectable toys and more. It is essential to know how to decorate this environment so intimate and essential to the routine with shelves!
How to choose the shelf for the bedroom
The decoration with shelves in the room is a very functional way to add beauty to the environment. The element is very practical, considered a decorating asset when you don’t quite know what to do to decorate the walls. It can even be the kickoff around which you’ll build pictures, posters, and make the vertical area of your environment amazing.
Ideal size for shelves
For a set of shelves to fulfil its purpose, it must first of all be properly sized. In bedrooms, we usually consider the minimum sizes for placing books, which is the most common of these elements. For this purpose, shelves need to be on average between 20 cm and 35 cm deep.
The height between one shelf and another should be between 25 cm and 35 cm. That way, you’ll be able to put many different objects on the shelves, from slightly larger books to framed picture frames and boxes. What is too big can be on the highest element of the set. An alternative is also to install the shelves misaligned or side by side.
How to install them yourself
When we buy bedroom shelves in home centres and other stores, we often install them ourselves. The process, thankfully, is not very complicated. The only tricky part is to be careful to check that the area of the wall where they will be placed does not have plumbing and plumbing that could be perforated by accident.
Always check if the purchased shelves come with all the necessary materials for their installation, such as brackets, screws and dowels – if not, make purchases according to what is specified for the model you have chosen.
When everything is fine, all you have to do is measure the wall and mark the installation locations and use the drill – very carefully, of course, to make the composition straight and well done! a good trick is to put a piece of masking tape from one mark to the other, before punching, to better visualize the placement and whether the placement will be level.
Shelf models for your dream room
Today there are several models of bedroom wall shelves that can meet the specific needs of your environment. Starting with the shelf structure itself: usually made of wood, a material with great cost-benefit, they can have a series of finishes and colours that disguise them, highlight them or perfectly complement the decor. There are still different ways in which they appear, from bookcases, ropes to screws and French handsets.
Glass shelves
We started the list of amazing shelves with a functional model and completely disguised in the environment. These are glass shelves, usually installed with discreet finishes, such as a French hand-painted in the same colour as the wall, for example. This is the case with this set of shelves in front of the window, which houses several small plants in clay pots. This configuration is a solution for inserting decor and plants in small rooms, with a lighter design.
We also find glass shelves in closed and different formats, composing niches whose plates are connected by metal supports. With the rise of the rosé gold trend, we started to find many pieces that combine glass with this metal colour on the market. The mix is one of the favourites of those looking for a light and romantic decoration, with elegant details.
Coloured shelves
According to colour psychology, blue and green are great nuanced options for bedroom decor. Although they are usually chosen for the walls, especially those in children’s bedrooms, nothing prevents them from appearing on accessories and shelves. In fact, this is an option for those who want to decorate with any colour, but don’t have the courage to bet on wallpaper or paint the entire wall.
The bedroom shelves, in coloured versions, brighten the decor like brush strokes on a blank canvas, while keeping the decor well balanced and sometimes even discreet.
Niche Style Shelves
Closed shelves, very common in square and hexagonal shapes, are also called niches. They are as practical as the conventional models, offering a more impressive look to the decor. They look good in any room size but are not so recommended for those looking for tricks that give a feeling of spaciousness, precisely because of this impact.
It is common to find niches in compositions of square and rectangular models in different tones, a way to bring dynamics to what is on the wall.
Frame shelves
One of the models of shelving for bedrooms that is on the rise are those made specifically for paintings. They have usually coloured the same shade as the wall for a more discreet visual effect. However, those who prefer something striking can bet on colour contrasts, from classic black and white to less neutral tones.
They are purchased or made-to-measure with a much smaller depth compared to conventional shelves, around 12 cm. Some even come with front support so that objects can be supported without falling. With this depth, they are completely dedicated to paintings, sometimes also housing a small plant vase, like a succulent, and the occasional book with a beautiful cover, always upright.
Rustic shelves
The urban jungle concept fell in favour of those who like interior design. It is based on the presence of many plants and natural materials in the environment. The trend ended up making even those who do not want environments that are complete urban forests begin to appreciate the presence of these elements, inserting them in their own home.
For this, it is not necessary to fill the room with plants – but the rustic décor, combined with a well-decorated room and other lighter pieces such as shelves for rooms with natural finishes, is capable of creating a very pleasant and relaxing environment. The wood knots and grains are an organic addition that makes all the difference in the final result of the room.
Hanging shelves
These bedroom shelves are another pure charm model. Hanging by ropes or belts, they complete the room’s decoration with its own texture and that of the elements that support it.
DIY shelves
Did you know you can make your own bedroom shelf? They can be made with pieces of wood of different sizes and French hand, in simpler versions.
Those looking for sustainability can reuse pallets and fair crates, sanding them to create a stylish and recycled shelf model. Even the suspended versions can be DIY, just buy appropriate ropes to support the weight of what is placed on top of the shelves.
Pegboard shelves
Pegboards are perforated boards, which can be made of either wood or metal. In their holes, we can put the “pegs”, in good Portuguese called dowels. In addition to serving as hooks, they can also support wooden boards that will fulfil the role of shelves. The advantage of this way of creating the furniture is that the configuration can always be changed, without much commitment. However, as it is not such a fixed version, it is recommended to place on this type of shelf elements that do not break easily or lighter items.
By the way, you can also make your own pegboard style perforated panel!
Shelves with unusual shapes
One way to bring personality to the room is to use unusual objects to compose the shelves.
As an example, in a room for a cool teenager, this element can be composed of skateboard shapes. To install them, you can use a French-hand set.
Headboard shelf
The headboards frame the bed, which in turn is considered the star of the room. It is common not to know very well what else to put on the headboard wall, as it already has such a large and relevant element. The solution is in them: the bedroom shelves.
A good way to occupy this wall well is to buy or mount a headboard with shelf depth. This way, you can put pictures on the wall, the books you like to read before bed and much more, without the decoration being overloaded with elements.
